This 20-mile drive follows US 14A through an ancient, narrow canyon between the cities of Spearfish and Lead, SD. To start at the northern end of the byway, take either Exit 10 or Exit 14 off of Interstate 90 to Spearfish and hop on 14A. To find the southern end, take Highway 85 east from Wyoming or west from Lead/Deadwood. When you come to the Cheyenne Crossing junction, head north on Highway 14A.  The scenic drive will take about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how many times you stop.  The highway follows an old, abandoned railroad grade.

Enjoy the natural beauty of the canyon’s 1,000-foot limestone palisades towering over the route as Spearfish Creek and a forest of pine, spruce, aspen, oak and birch line the canyon floor.  Along the drive you’ll be able to see three waterfalls:  Bridal Veil Falls, Roughlock Falls, and Spearfish Falls.  Stop to view the mountains in the distance or marvel at colorful fall foliage. Visitors can also hike and fish blue-ribbon trout streams in the area.
