The reconstructed lodge will be closed to visitors but you will be able to look inside the lodge from its entrance and exit. This was a difficult decision because we know that everyone loves to tour the lodge. The lodge is an enclosed small space, and with its myriad of surfaces (wood, furs, stone) it would be extremely difficult to disinfect. For your safety and that of our staff members, we chose to temporarily close the structure. Discover how Native Americans lived in south Dakota one thousand years ago! The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village is the only archaeological site in South Dakota open to the public. Archaeologists have been excavating this site since the 1920s. Visitors can tour the Boehnen Memorial Museum, where there is a life-size reconstructed lodge house, bison skeleton and many artifacts from the dig site. The dig site is fully enclosed inside the Archeodome, where visitors can watch the archaeologists work in the dig site or in the laboratory from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend. Children can dig for a free arrowhead! Our gift shop, the Shoppe Antiquary, has Native American and regional art, a great book selection and much, much more.
